A youth group in Asa local government area of Kwara State, 'Asa Eminent Youths', yesterday asked a former National Secretary and National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, to contest the 2023 Senatorial election to bring more effective representation to the people of Kwara Central Senatorial district.
Baraje, is the new Tafida of Ilorin and former Board Chairman, Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The group, however, said that “advocacy for the candidature of Baraje is never a detrimental scheme to the young generation, with the current economic reality, we can’t afford to elect an inexperienced dude that will spend better part of his time at the red chamber to build relationships across party lines which the old but energetic Kawu already had."
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, the Coordinator of Asa Eminent Youths (AEY), Hon. Kayode Yusuf Ayegun, who was flanked by the Secretary, Hon. Biodun Ajelanwa, said the group is more than ready to give its best to the Baraje project, adding that, his representation will do the senatorial district more good at this material time.
Various youth groups, women associations, artisans and elites across the four local governments of Asa, Ilorin East, Ilorin West and Ilorin South that comprises of Kwara Central Senatorial district have been sending clarion call to the academician and administrator per excellence lately, asking him to come out and represent them at the Nigerian Senate come 2023. The seat is for the experienced, mature, exposed, vibrant, charismatic and influential figure with local intelligence, that's why and how the name Baraje came in.
The group also said that Baraje is loved and appreciated by both old and young across party lines, owing to his antecedents and numerous achievements both in public and private life.
“The Baraje we know will right many wrongs we witness today in terms of poor representation at the national level and will improve on the right steps of the past, particularly in terms of dividends of democracy.
"The group boasted with huge confidence of what Baraje, with his wealth of experience and background will bring to forth, to benefit Kwara Central in terms of socio-political and economic development.
"The leadership of the concerned youths of Asa, under the umbrella of 'Asa Eminent Youths' with over 2000 members from across the 17 wards of the local government, said they have come to the realisation that they can’t allow those who have no human relations, no electoral value, lack of accessibilty, arrogant with poor local intelligence to represent the good people of Kwara Central Senatorial district come 2023.
“It is, therefore, imperative for us to come together as a people with common pains and consanguinity, and take control of our future by getting involved in party politics and the electoral processes, even though we are apolitical, with the aim of supporting candidates of our choice to get into the position of leadership across the state.
"The group, however, appealed to the ever smiling and friendly Baraje to heed to their call and throw his hat in the ring to run for the seat of the most populous senatorial district of the state in the 2023 election."
